Kaleidoscope would like to send a huge thank you to our BIPOC Affinity group and our friends at 345 Art Gallery here in Chicago, for partnering and hosting Kaleidoscope’s Juneteenth celebration last week. Kaleidoscope teams were able to come together and hear live performances, explore the gallery, and hear speakers regarding the history and significance of Juneteenth. As an organization that works directly with families and communities, we know it is important for our teams to continue learning about various cultures and events significant to families we serve.
Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States, when news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached Galveston, Texas more than 2 years after it was signed. Today it’s an opportunity to reflect on the past so we can learn and improve in the future, but it’s also a chance to celebrate. An opportunity to celebrate Black culture, accomplishments, and contributions to society.
While the official holiday is June 19, cities across the country had celebrations all week long, including Chicago. Kaleidoscope offices were closed on Monday, June 20 to give our teams time to celebrate and commemorate Juneteenth in their own way.
